ALFREDO LERMA LUTHIER
Lutes and Historical Guitars
Preserving Sound, Honoring History
There are few activities that remain so deeply rooted in traditional methods and techniques as the arts and crafts involved in lutherie.
For more than 15 years, I trained with masters from around the world in the construction, restoration, and conservation of historical instruments, as well as in anthropological, organological, and musicological research on the evolution of stringed instruments.
These experiences have given me a deep respect for the knowledge and understanding required to preserve these arts and crafts, and I have taken on the responsibility of dedicating myself to passing on as much of the knowledge I have acquired as possible to future generations.
The Lutherie Legacy
Through different stages fo technical, university, and artistic studies, I taught myself my craft.
I have been working with musical instruments of various types, such as violins, violas, harps, lyres, pianolas, mandolins, lutes, vihuelas, and classical, romantic, Renaissance, and baroque guitars, for almost 20 years.
I currently reside in Montevideo, Uruguay, where I continue to research and share my experiences in collaboration with fellow musicians, luthiers, and apprentices.
I feel very fortunate to be able to enjoy this work with archaeologists, musicologists, museologists, and historians dedicated to the preservation of instruments belonging to public and private collections around the world.
Lutherie Courses
Without the transmission of knowledge, many arts and crafts are doomed to die out with their masters.
Having dedicated my life to lutherie, I believe it is important that this profession be preserved and continue to develop in the future, and this is what drives me to offer my personalized courses.
In these classes, we carry out specific tasks, focusing on the concrete objectives necessary to complete each apprentice's projects.
-
Maintenance
The instrument maintenance course covers the essential skills for diagnosing, conserving, and adjusting classical guitars and other plucked string instruments.
No prior experience or materials are needed. Bring your instrument and learn to keep it in top condition.
-
Repairs
In instrument repair courses, you learn the methods and techniques for repairing and maintaining various instruments, such as guitars, violins, and lutes.
These theoretical and practical sessions cover everything from minor repairs to complex reconstructions, following a step-by-step plan and using the materials and tools available in the workshop. -
Varnishes
This course requires the highest level of experience. I call it the “Wizard” level, and it is intended only for expert colleagues, as it involves knowledge, methods, techniques, and handling of resins, oils, and thinners that are used at high temperatures (between 150 and 350 degrees).
If you want to learn how to prepare and apply high-quality master varnishes, you must be prepared for this challenge.
The course includes the materials to enable you to achieve the finishes you want to “highlight” (mixed or oil varnishes, with or without antiquing, with glossy or semi-matte finishes) on your professional instruments.
